Keeping Your Childs Teeth Healthy
Babies and young children rely on parents and caregivers for good health. Take an active role in cleaning them at home, providing, a balanced diet, and scheduling regular dental visits. Its important that parents and caregivers teach and practice healthy habits that children will continue into adulthood.
Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease, but it can be prevented! Early childhood caries is tooth decay that occurs in the primary (baby) teeth of children. It occurs when the child's teeth are frequently exposed to sugary liquids for long periods of time. Such liquids include fruit juice, soda and other sweetened liquids, milk, breast milk and formula.
Tooth decay can begin as soon as a baby's teeth come in, usually by age six months or so. Decay in baby teeth can cause pain. Left untreated, it can destroy the teeth of an infant or young child, tooth decay can also have an effect on a child's general health. He or she may have difficulty eating resulting in poor nutrition.

What Is Pediatric Dentistry?
A pediatric dentistry is a specialty dental practice designed for the care of children's teeth. If your infant has begun teething, a first dental visit is not far behind. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that an infant's first dental visit occurs as soon as there are two teeth that touch, and no later than their first birthday. This ensures that your child's infant teeth remain healthy, which is an important component in developing strong permanent teeth.
A child's deciduous, or primary teeth are commonly referred to as baby teeth. Baby teeth are different from adult teeth in size and structure. These differences allow for decay to spread faster through baby teeth than permanent teeth. If decay is allowed to persist in baby teeth it can have a permanent effect on the adult teeth developing near the roots, causing irreversible damage.
The earlier you start your child's dental health care, it will increase the chances of preventing dental health problems. As soon as the first teeth break through the gum surface, they should be cleaned regularly, using a clean washcloth or a gauze pad to gently remove harmful plaque from the teeth.
At Kids Dental Care, it is our belief that prevention is the most important factor in the treatment of dental disease. this is why we take the time to teach children about good dietary habits, brushing, and flossing.
